Bathrooms and facilities are clean, but the layout is outright silly. Very cramped in the free weight area. I do enjoy the upstairs track and the pool. Sauna is nice, but the people in there can be a little nasty at times(nasty feet, but it happens). I’ll give it a one solely due to the fact that I mainly use the free weights and it’s hard to navigate the cramped free weight area at peak times. Just feels unsafe.
I travel a lot for work and the YMCA here and other locations in the Louisville area are some of the nicest I’ve seen! New modern facilities, large pool area with slide for the kids, stay and play for my younger one so I can work out. Fantastic!
Instructors stay on target with the skills they are working toward, they push the children to be strong swimmers, pool safety is consistently discussed, and lifeguards are so friendly as well as on top of keeping all swimmers safe. In addition to the wonderful lessons, one instructor, Abbey, went above and beyond to get my boys confidence to go down the giant water slide and encouraged them long after the session was over. I love the curriculum they follow. My 3-year-old can now swim in the deep end with no life-jacket and can go down the giant slide with no issue. My 5-year-old is now swimming beyond a full length pool and has so much confidence in the water. They have come a long way in just a two, two week sessions. We have pleasant experiences every time we visit the New Albany, Floyd County YMCA to swim.
One day we went to play ball. The lady had the audacity to tell us we didn't belong there. When we walked the track there was a man on a business call speaking loudly enough for 1st floor locker room people to hear him. On another occasion & lastly, the jets in warm water pool were haulted by a very rude instructor. She stated they needed to hear. The only thing turning the jets off allowed you to hear were the Christmas jingles she had playing in the background. The jets were on 20 minutes into the class duration. It is adamantly concerning the attitudes here! If you want to be treated disrespectful go here!
The free weights, benches, cable machines upstairs are way too cramped. Not sure why they changed everything. The gym was closed for three days for a poorly done rearrangement. Every time I try to do free weights, I have to stop in the middle of my set to let people walk pass because they decided to throw all the free weights and bulky equipment into one small space, and people can’t get around the equipment properly and safely. I have almost bumped into people trying to bench due to how cramped it is. Very poorly thought out layout. Can’t wait for it to go back. Whoever made the decision needs to rethink it. If you want to not be cramped and get bumped into while you do your workout, this is no longer the place to go.
It's a wonderful facility and clean! Great options from equipment, to pools, play area for kids, basketball, rock wall and classes. Instructors and staff are really great!
They recently decided to rearrange the whole gym this past weekend of October 12th through the 15th. They crammed ALL the free weights into a small section instead of dividing them up between the two floors. Not only does this make the upstairs far more crammed, it has made it completely unsafe. I practically touch other people whenever I work out. Now, the space where the other weights were is a bunch of free space with cardio machines. Horrible waste of space and not practical in the slightest. Not an intelligent layout. Also, they never change the filters on their water fountains and it's made the water taste weird and almost metallic. Whoever made pushed forth the idea of rearranging the gym should probably take a back seat from now on. If you don't want to be crammed into a small space to workout in a large building, and be shoulder to shoulder with other people while lifting, I'd suggest staying away from this place. They do not have you in mind.
Have been going for over 6 years. Has always been clean, top of the line equipment and pools, and staff always nice and helpful. Great place to workout.
